Job Shadow?
Job shadow is just that, you are following an individual in their regular position and gaining an understanding of what the actual duties of the position are. More specifically, it is defined as a opportunity that allows a student, employee, or intern to gain comprehensive knowledge about what an employee who holds a particular job does everyday. Please see Career Coaches for these type of opportunities
Apprenticeship
Apprenticeship is technically defined as a system of training a new generation of practitioners of a trade or profession with on-the-job training and often some accompanying study (classwork or reading). This is a way to get trained on the job and still gain the knowledge to become an expert.
Internship
Internship, to put simply, is a period of time spent receiving or completing training at a job as a part of becoming qualified to do it. Often this is after at least a year or so of education in a particular field.
You can normally find internships the same way you find jobs. With that being said it is important that when in college you take advantage of your career resources center. This is where you will find the best information about internships in your surrounding area.

Certifications?
Having a certification is a way that shows you are qualified to do a specific job or task. You may require certain certifications with your degree or even in the position you hold. Work-Based Learning
Work-Based Learning opportunities come in various forms, including some job shadowing and apprenticeships. WBL is useful because it demonstrates the applications of classroom learning in the real world and it is engaging because of the use of authentic tasks and tools and it teaches employability skills. An example would be the annual G.L.A.M.S. event hosted by South Arkansas Community College. This is an interactive, hands-on experience provided to 8th grade girls across districts to increase their awareness and motivation about careers in the STEM field. There are work-based learning opportunities offered by employers and occasionally through local colleges and universities.
